Approach

To stimulate research in pulp and paper at the University of Toronto, the Centre provides assistance to faculty and students in their attempts to identify and develop research projects and secure funding. We should never turn away good students because of lack of funds. The Centre has seed money to boost worthy projects. Sometimes a trip to a conference or a visit to a mill makes all the difference in crystallizing a concept or resolving issues with an industrial collaborator.

Research topics are generated by faculty and student enthusiasm. The Centre guides research efforts by calling attention to an industry problem or promoting faculty expertise. Most important, we want to encourage all faculty members and students who would like to connect their research interests to this industry to join us.

To facilitate industry participation in Centre research, we have formed several research consortia in which specific projects are described and presented to industry. Companies are asked to make a financial contribution to and participate in discussions about research results and to help establish research directions. To date, we have formed seventeen consortia, five of which were in operation this past year, and they were:

  1. Minimizing the Impact of Pulp and Paper Mill Discharges (January 2000 – December 2003)

  2. Increasing the Throughput and Reliability of Recovery Boilers and Lime Kilns (January 2001– December 2003)

  3. Surface Science for Superior Paper in the Digital Era (January 2003 – December 2005)

  4. Increasing Energy and Chemical Recovery Efficiency in the Kraft Process (January 2004 – December 2008)

  5. Towards Ecological Balance in Pulp and Paper Operations: Application of Molecular and Engineering Sciences for the Development of Strategies for Improved Environmental Management (May 2004 – April 2007)

Research results are transmitted to industry supporters in electronic format on an ongoing basis, and through conferences and journals. For the members of each consortium, meetings are held to review results specific to the consortium. A list of Pulp & Paper Centre publications can be found under each research section in the side navigation bar.
